As far as the history of nightclubs is concerned, they date back to the 1900’s when nightclubs made a serious departure or functioned illegally because of the US Prohibition, which was finally lifted in 1933. Thereafter the trend or craze returned with separate nightlife destinations for the black and white people.
The 1950’s ushered in the era of juke box and live music performances. However today’s archetype of a discotheque must have been inherited from Paris’ Whisky Gogo club, which brought with itself for the first time, a special floor for dance enthusiasts, and two turntables, for an incessant flow of music on the floor.
The 1970’s saw some fascinating lighting systems that would go pit- a- pat with the beat of music. Several schools introduced nightclub dancing lessons such as hustle, cha cha, and touch dancing. The disco also brought about a fashion revival with flowing Halston outfits for the girls and shimmering polyester Qiana apparels for the boys. This era also ushered in some negative aspects of the nightlife. Drugs became a part of recreation at the nightclubs, homosexuals emerged from their cocoons and the dance floors became a place for seduction and consumption of alcohol.
With the beginning of 1980’s, this scenario changed under the new Romantic upheaval in New York, London, and continental Europe. There was a rising popularity of Boy George, Culture Club, and reggae bands, young men clubbers sometimes put on make-up while women night clubbers began to wear men’s outfits.
From the 1990’s till the present time, the nightclubs are more inclined towards having house music, hip-hop, techno, trance or electro. A very new concept has been introduced that the use of both video and audio mixing by DJs, in which huge screens are placed near the dance floor.
