I need help. I am a 25 year old female and for the past two weeks I have been experience extreme chest pain on the left side of my body. Naturally under my breast line region. When the pain start it cames on when I laugh but lately when I lie in bed at night I feel the tigthen of my chest which usually last about thirty seconds to one minute and then stop. I made an appointment with my doctor but should I go to the emergency room or just wait for my appointment. The pain on the scale of 1-10 is a 8. My pulse don’t seem to be abnormal. I do not have any discomfort breathing. However yesterday, which was 8/17/2009 around 10:15 pm I felt the pain on my left back area. Please Help

    Hi Frnz,
I am also experiencing similar problem since last night. Its almost 12 hrs now but the pain on left side of chest is persistent. I am 26 and have a family history of heart ailments.
My heart beat isvery low and since last few weeks I am under extreme stress and anxiety due to personal life problems.
All this is forcing me to relate this to heart problem. From last 1 week I am suffering from back pain and had fever for last 2 days, but this left side chest pain is new development. I feel more pain when I laugh or talk loudly.
Let me know if ur Dr suggests anything on this case .. Thanks in adv.

i have been experiencing chest pain (leftside) that spreads into my left arm, shoulder and back, and i am not to sure what the cause is. it seems that it only happens when i get extremely upset. i also then have trouble breathing – not hyperventelating as such, but rather just stop breathing for short periods of time and have to remind myself to breath. i would like to establish if the two situations are realted and if i should be more concerned about getting my lungs checked out or my heart… any opinion?

I am a 23 year old female. I have been experiencing pains in the left side of my chest, back, neck and arm for about 2 months now. I had a stress echocardiagram done in september along with a chest xray which results all came back normal. I also had a ton of bloodwork done at the same time. Sometimes the pain is very sharp… at other times it almost feels like pins and needles. I am a smoker and am on birth control which makes me paranoid about the possibility of a blood clot. OR, because the pain is in my back and neck I was wondering if its possible it could be a pinched nerve or nerve damage?
    thank you…..

      Hi Deidre,

I am a 32 year old female. i have experienced the exact same symptoms as you. Are you still having these symptoms? My chest pain started at 2 AM as severe sharp “stabbing” pain in the heart/chest area, with resulting spread of numbness and pain into my left shoulder and down the arm. I went to emergency only to be told that it was probably just a chest infection. But had recurring symptoms for the entire week following. After an episode of shortness of breath and dizzyness while vaccuuming, I called the family Dr. I was sent for blood tests, chest X-Ray, ECG and EKG. The blood test came back after three days and I was notified personally by my Dr. to go to emergency immediately for a heparin injection. While at the hospital, my symptoms became worse with severe sudden headache, and seeing “spots” in my vision. The same emergency dr. saw me from my previous visit. However, this is where my story gets upsetting…The Dr. ordered some more blood samples and ECG. After waiting for 4 hours, he came into my room and told me to go home. He didn’t ask me how I was feeling, he didn’t check my body/touch me NOTHING! He just stood 8 feet away from me on the other side of the room and let me go. I tried to tell him I was feeling worse, but the had this äire about him and his posture told me that her was upset that I was back again at the hospital!! I felt like I was being treated like a “mental patient” I called my Dr. the next morning to tell him about this and am still awaiting some kind of answer as to what my problem is. I am upset, confused and worried about my health. I feel like no one is listening to me. I have 3 children under the age of 6 and need to be at home taking care of them….not having a heart attack because the Dr. won’t hear my complaints.!!! Good luck to you and hope you get a chance to figure out what is wrong.

I’m 37 and seem to have the same issues as the rest of you. The main pain for me is on the left side of my left breast and seems to happen in the evening and/or when sleeping I lay on my left side, it seems to get worse when I do that. The pain is also under my left arm and sometimes the back of my shoulder also on the left side of my body. I have been checking out other sites like this one, I am by no means saying you should not see your Dr. about your pain but many people are discovering that the pain began when they had something stressful happen or when they are stressed out. Being a single mother of 3 boys I am ALWAYS stressed but have only had the pain for about 6 months.

I will just be sat watching tele etc then i will get a big sharp pain in my left side of the chest. If i take a normal breathe its extremely painful so i have to take very short little breathes. If i do this the pain goes after ten – 20 seconds a i seem to relax. Other morning i woke up startled as my car alarm was going off. My heart was pounding and with each beat i had a little pain but nothing harsh just very slight.
I use to train and excersice 3-4 times a week but havn’t for 6 month. I have been getting the sharp pains which i have to take short breathes for for years at least 5 i am 27 now and my older brother of 2 years also gets the same.
Any ideas would be very greatful.

I run and play tennis but I notice about 9 months ago while at work my heart beat would increase for a about 10 minutes. I wasn’t like I was having any anxiety attacks. I figured is was just all the affects of the caffeine from Coffee and Red Bull. I then thought it was just heart burn. However, I started to feel not pain but discomfort right underneath my left pectorial. I thought could it be heartburn due to the caffeine? Confused and concerned. My paternal side has a history of heart problems. My paternal grandmother and father both died of heart problems. My dad really had a horrible eating and drinking habits. He didn’t work out and he drank and smoked. So I know he may have just predisposed his problem.
I’m 39 and have been in sales for 6 yrs. Could the stress of my occupation be taking a toll on my heart. I’m studying for the Series 7 exam(major stress) I will get the pains when I get nervous about taking the test???

    Any suggestions??

I am 14 and just in the last 1-2 weeks had a weird pain in my chest. It was on the left side under the breast and it got worse when I breathed in. I’d never felt this before, and ignored it since it hurt but wasnt unbearable. It went away quickly. It’s hardly been more than a week and I got it 3 times just today. I don’t think it’s getting more painful but it happens more often and lasts longer. I read that it could have something to do with gas buildup or something? Does that mean burping could help relieve it?? I also read one woman say that she had pain when wearing tight tops, and another say it happened when she drank some kind of sport drink. Could it also be due to bad posture?? I don’t know very much about this kind of thing, but I don’t want it to get worse, so i’m going to see if I can solve the problem on my own. I know it’s unlikely, but i’m going to avoid tight tops and wear baggy clothing, try burping since I RARELY do, try to have better posture since mine is pathetic, and avoid caffinated drinks temporarily to rule out any of these things if they happen to be the problem.

I am a 68 year old female, in pretty good health. I have been having this pain in my upper left side chest. I too am scared of the answer, but having read this page I feel a bit better and maybe my husband is right in assuming that I have pulled a muscle when turning the mattress the other morning. If it is just a muscle pull, I do wish it would hurry up and heal. The pain is such a worry and my imagination is frightening. If there is no improvement in a couple of days I’ll have to see a doctor.

I present almost the same symptoms – a pain on my left side, above my heart, and it hurts when I breath, with moments when I feel short burns on my breat.
I assumed it was a breast pain or a pulled muscle. It`s been hurting me from a while, but I did not pay attention cause the pain was coming and going; but now I have it continuously for over 48 hours, and its intensity it grew from 4 to 8, on a 1 to 10 scale. I feel also the pain radiating on my armpit and my left arm, and I don`t think it`s from sleeping on the left side.
I have been reading about panic attacks, which have similar symptoms: I have been stressed lately and worked a lot, with long hours and less sleep than usual.
I was thinking that the panic attacks are happening only when u are under pressure, exposed to high levels of stress, not after, as a delayed reaction.

I’m 26 year old male and I’ve experienced the same sharp chest pains (left side) since I was +_9 years old. Its occurs randomly (when relaxing or when lying down or after excercising) but it only usually lasts +_30 seconds. Only seldom (when I get chest pains) does it hurt more when inhaling. Usually tapping with a fist on my chest helps the pain subside.

My blood pressure is fine and I’m “as fit as a fiddle” according to doctors I’ve been to for checkups, although I havn’t gone indepth with addressing the chest pains.

I don’t however, like in the above posts, experience any of the above problems (fever, cough, nausea(vomiting), perspiration, high blood pressure, high cholesterol, diabetes, sore back, sore shoulders) and as with any job, little sleep and stress comes with the territory, but that’s more than made up for on the odd weekend. (But, seriously, what stress could a 9 year old have?)

So far as I know the only problem they picked up was a heart murmor when I was a kid and I believe that’s phased out without the use of medications.

I’ve grown to live with the pain, albeit moderate, that comes once a month to three times a week, but it still is a growing concern…

    Any advice?

I am relieved to be reminded that I am not the only one experiencing this pain. I do believe anyone 30+ should visit a Dr. with symptoms like ours; however, those of us who are younger rarely need to be concerned about a heart attack. I am 23 and have been experiencing seemingly ramdom chest pain since I was apprx. 12 yrs. old.

I have noticed that the pain is possibly induced when the following three things occur: 1. Stress due either to emotional or physical sources, 2. Poor posture, and 3. Food that upsets the stomach. I have yet to figure out what foods particularly set off my spells of pain, but I am working on it.

I have found that the solutions to my pain that work the best are the following; 1. Take deep breaths, focusing on relaxing, 2. Practice good posture, holding my shoulders back, and 3. Sleeping on my back with my head tilted to the right.

Let me know if this helps anyone else!

I have a tiny stone in the kidney.. very tiny that nothing should be done with it accrdg. to the doctors. I was told at nite time to eat & drink 3 hours before going to bed. Not to drink anything with caffeine. Refrain from eating fastfoods. A friend of mine told me to try to drink black cherry juice once day. I tried it for 2 weeks now and it helps a little bit. I can still feel the pressure but it is not as discomforting as before. Another friend suggested that I should boil fresh parsley and drink the water from it. I did try it too-to cleanse my kidney.

I am 53 yr.old female. About 6 weeks ago I was doing alot of bending forward & heavy lifting. I was thinning out my book collection. Shortly after, I had horrible left side, left back & left rib/breast pain. I cannot sleep lying down. The pain is so bad I feel nauseaus. I have lost my appetite . I only eat minute amounts, & only because I know I need to eat something. I am weak & have no quality of life. I was taking Tylenol 3 for the pain but it caused hideous stomach pain/acid reflux. I stopped taking the Tylenol 3. I laid down on the soft couch today & actually slept for an hour. Our dog woke me up to go potty. I had a hard time raising myself up off the couch & THE PAIN STABBED LIKE A BURNING SEARING through my left side under the breast. I literally doubled over. That was about 3 hrs. ago. I now have unrelenting pain in my left side. I don’t know if it is a pulled muscle, GERD ,ulcer or??? I see my G.P. tomorrow. Hopefully, he’ll be able to figure this out. I hate going to doctor’s but I can’ t live with this pain !!!!! I forgot to mention I can only sleep sitting up & that I have severe swelling of my feet, ankles & legs.

But now its back and its in my left arm as well the pain was so bad i couldnt bend my arm

I’ve had the same pains on and off for approx. 20 years. When I first mentioned it to my GP after the first attack, I was sent to the Hospital for the usual blood tests and x-rays, but all came back negative. In 2003 I had a bad attack, the left side of my face felt numb and had pains down my left arm. I was told I had a chest infection. In 2005 I had another attack in the night, couldn’t move, was stuck in one position with dreadful chest pains. My husband called an ambulance and I was kept in A&E overnight. I was advised that it is a condition called ‘Costochondritis’, treatable with Ibuprofen, if that doesn’t work then ask for stronger medication from your GP. I’ve recently had another bad attack, Ibuprofen helps, but had to sleep on my back for approx. 6 weeks. The attacks usually coincide when one of my children has a very bad cold/viral infection. You can manage the attacks, I usually get warning twinges and start taking the Ibuprofen. It normally does the trick.

Hey I’m 19 and have asthma so I occasionally get chest pains. But recently, I’ve had different chest pains not unlike lots described here by other young women – left side around bra line. My stomach’s been flipping lately since I’m sick and taking opioid antitussives, so that could be a cause now but previously, I would occasionally get those weird pains. Just a thought though, could it be from an ill-fitting bra? Could the wire be digging into breast tissue or just too tight and thus causing rather localised chest pain? I know I’ve gained weight recently and don’t always have well-fitting ones, but there are some figures around that over half of women wear ill-fitting bras.

I am a 37 year old male who has had chronic left sided chest and shoulder pain for 4.5 years now. I have suffered numerous attacks when I thought I was having a heart attack. I was a fit man with a sporting back ground and have not been able to do any physical activity since. I have seen various cardiologists and pain specialists who have never managed to diagnose the issue – Costoclonditis/Chronic Myocarditis and Sporting shoulder injury have all been investigated. I wear a Tens machine now to aid with pain relief. It works, but only masks the pain. I now get the pain in my RHS occasionally. The pain gets worse if I drink alcohol or try to exert physically. The pain is constanty there and the level of pain fluctuates. I have learned to live with the normal pain level, but in extreme circumstances the pain is too much to deal with. Any advice greatly received?

Does anyone have any actual advice on this site? I think it’s great everyone is sharing their stories, but it would be nice if there was some sort of follow up in regards to these symptoms. I think it’s clear we are all having very similar symptoms. I would like to know what you all found out in regards to your symptoms? i.e diagnosis??

Hi – I have been having sharp chest pains on my left side since I was 23 years old – I am now 44. It happens randomly and may last for up to 2 days. It is aggravated by breathing in deeply or moving/twisting body and I can only lay down in bed at night on my left side or on my back. If I try to turn onto my right side I certainly know about it! I will often have to prop up my pillows and try and sleep sitting up to stop the stabbing pains and take light breaths. I have been sent to the hospital for X-rays on several occassions during the years had my pulse, blood pressure and heart listened to etc but everything always looks normal. I truly believe that the situation is due to stress as whenever it’s happened to me I have been stressed. I have learned to ‘take time out’, stop what i’m doing, switch my brain off and be kind to myself and it passes. There is a history of heart problems with my father and grandfather so obviously I get stressed it’s a heart attack and this makes the pain worse, so I have learned to calm myself down. It’s best to always get the pain checked out though. I am already taking painkillers and Naproxen for Athritis and these don’t make any difference.

I have just been to A & E – I have been having what feels like a severe stitch/cramp in my left side Chest, that started in my right side of chest a month ago. But this took my breath away. 4 weeks ago my GP said i had probably strained/pulled a muscle in my chest- however it comes and goes- mainly when i move around, but it disturbs my sleep. The Consultant and DR in emergency room said they thought it was a breast bone infection which can be caused by stress and anxiety or being generally run down. You have to fully rest and use muscle relief creams or medicines such as anti- inflammortories. If the pain still persists or increases to go back asap. I am not allowed to lift, pull, push anything for at least 7 days. My movement is limited aswell as it hurts leaning over or doing stuff with my Left arm. I will keep you updated.

I too have experienced that hideous pain, its going on 8 years. I am a 28 yr old FEMALE. There was this one time when I was driving and the pain came…the WORST feeling…I had to stop the car and I cried, it lasted less than 60 seconds and I was back on the road again. I have been to the doctor SEVERAL times and they diagnosed it as “Costochondritis”, which is inflammation of the rib cage. They(the doctors) said one cause was stress, they even mentioned that WOMEN are more likely to experience these pains. The doctor perscribed an anti inflammatory steroid and after i ran out of those he told me to start using ibuprofen, to exercise, and to try not eating right before bed. A lady that I mentioned it too said that hers comes around the time her menstral cycle comes on, I can atest to that, as well, “IT DOES!!”. I would advise you ladies to hit the doctor because eventhough you feel as though it is not that important its probably a whole different situation with you.

    Hey Yall

I am a 22 year old female. I have been having severe chest pains under my left breast and sometimes above it and kinda in the middle of my chest also. This usually comes with pain in the upper left back and shoulder and neck. My left pinky and left foot has been numb on and off now for a couple of years. I have had the chest pains for about 2 years now too. My symptoms sound very similar to all of yours. I have had my heart checked and they found nothing and could not tell me anything. This does scare me though because I know just because we are young doesn’t mean were not at risk for a heart attack. Very scary and worries me a lot! What to do?

    Hello,
I really appreciate reading everyones experiences with their chest pains, I am 19 and I have had chest pains since I was 7 years old, and the doctor still doesn’t know what it is. There were only a couple of blogs of people that wrote on this site that I can relate to. My chest pains come randomly, i could be driving or I could be in class or even just waking up in the morning. They can come once a month, one a year, or 3 times in a day.. it varies. I have now learned how to control them by applying pressure on my left breast in circular movements, When I was little I would hit myself repeatedly for hours at night until the left side of my chest was black and blue (I know.. scary!) The pains occur right behind my left breast, they feel almost as though a bone has popped out of place and if I take too deep of breath I feel as though it will pop (which hurts a lot). I have only had about 3 full-on attacks when I took too deep of a breath and I fell the gorund and collapsed. But now I just breath very slowly and rub on my chest, I can’t speak a lot or get overwhelmed and I feel as though my left arm feels a bit weak and I dont want to lift it. They last for either half an hour, or they can go on for 3 hrs, it varies and I never know what to expect, but they are scary and I wish a doctor could tell me what is wrong with me.

    Hey
I have been experiencing left chest pains for the longest while. I thought it was due to alcohol consumption so i stopped drinking for awhile. The pain continued but not as bad but I have realsed that it gets worse whenever I drink. Although I did not drink last night, it was worst that I ever felt. It was as if my chest was tearing apart whenever I lay on my right side. To relieve the pain I had to lay on my left side holding tight my left chest. The pain continued all night. Right now I am feeling a heaviness in my chest as though my heart is swollen. I plan to visit the doctor tomorrow.
Any suggestions as to cause will help.

hi all, i have beng having the same symptoms 4 over a year now, last august i went to my gp as the chest pain was unbearable, i also had continuous headaches and vomiting up acid. the gp told me that if the chest pain persisted just to take 2 paracetomol and sleep it off, i wasnt 2 pleased about that so i kept on pestering them. the gp said that it was a gastric problem as they done all sorts of tests and they all came back normal. they put me on antibiotics 3 times were i had 2 take 9 tablets a day for 2 weeks and then go bk to my gp in a months time, a day after i finished the course my gastric problem persisted. the chest pains have subsided a bit i just get the odd twinge, i decided to watch my diet, i stopped eating crisps, chocolate and sweet foods which i think was the reason why my chest pains went away. but today 20/10/10 i had a packet of crisps and after i finished them the chest pain on the left hand side of my chest came bk. these pains are really affecting my social life and i work in retail and often talk to customers and as im always burping people think im being rude.. i just want these pains to go away help!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
