As already has been mentioned that poor blood circulation or lack of proper blood-circulation in some specific parts of human body causes numbness followed by tingling sensation, it is nervous system’s collapsing or getting dysfunctional in transmitting to the brain signals of sensation, experienced as an impact over external part of body. The brain fails to fathom any sensation such as pinching or needle-piercing due to nerve cells (aka neurons) failing to sense impact on outer part of human body. It is only after a proper posture adopted by particular limbs such as hands, legs, foot or fingers which allows them to start experiencing everything naturally what is impacted on them.

Maximum number of the people sleep so deeply placing their hands either over pillow or above their head that natural blood circulation of their hands is affected badly resulting into poor supply of blood causing thereby numbness in hands while sleeping. There are many people who prefer to sleep abdominally with both of their hands twisted and placed underneath their chest. Such posture is one of the major conditions causing numbness in the hands of people while sleeping. In simple words, the compression or poor blood circulation is the main cause of numbness in the hands followed by a tingling sensation.

Causes of numbness and prickling sensation

There is multitude of additional causes, of numbness apart of poor blood circulation. The numbness affects not only the hands but some other parts of body as well, such as legs, neck, ear and fingers. Medically known as paresthesia, the numbness and prickling sensation occur due to different conditions that are being mentioned over here.

  • Peripheral nerve disorder.
  • Nutritional deficiency or malnutrition.
  • Metabolic disorder.
  • Diabetes or sugar problem.
  • Hypothyroidism (a thyroid gland disease).
  • Excessive consumption of alcohol.
  • Deficiency of vitamin B 12.
  • Mental shock, extreme anxiety, or psychological trauma.
  • Medicinal side effects.
  • Injuries affecting the nerve cells.
  • Inflammation or burns weakening the tissues.
  • Muscular diseases damaging the tissues.
  • Arthritis.
  • Systemic lupus erythematosus.
  • Vascular disease causing burning sensation and ischemia.
  • Sjögren’s syndrome that is a health disorder producing excessive moisture in some specific internal parts of body including the salivary glands.
  • Harmful substances or toxic materials such as arsenic, lead and mercury.
  • Medicinal products or antibiotics.
  • Chemotherapy agents and solvents.

  • Genetic diseases like Charcot-Marie-Tooth disease, porphyria and Denny-Brown’s syndrome.
  • Dysfunction of nervous system.
  • Transient ischemic attack (TIA).
  • Leprosy.

Symptoms of paresthesia

Though numbness and tingling sensations are the explicit symptoms of paresthesia, caused by interference in the nerve cells, the weakness, nervousness, frustration and dormancy are the additional symptoms of the disease. Dysfunctional neurons or nerve cells fail to innervate or transmit a signal of impact (piercing, burning or pinching), caused on external part of body like hands or fingers, which renders the mind completely dormant in sensing the effect. Such condition causes a weakness in the body, a vivid symptom of the paresthesia. Men and women suffering from diabetes experience numbness in their hands and fingers on waking up or rising from bed. The numbness may occur if someone remains seated in a same posture for long. If the numbness, followed by tingling sensation, occurs due to compression or improper posture, the individual should take it normally and ensure rectitude of theirs physical position. But in case numbness is experienced in the hands unconditionally or while sleeping, sitting or doing routine works, it should be taken as a critical condition associated somehow with any disease or medicinal side effect. The person, affected from such type of condition should immediately consult a doctor.

The individuals experiencing the numbness in their hands, fingers or legs while sleeping also should dwell on the problem seriously and sort it out in consultation with a doctor. Keep it remember that numbness followed by tingling or prickling sensation provided is caused by compression on limb due to improper posture, it is a common problem. Only a doctor reaches in-depth of actual causes of numbness in hands or fingers affecting the individual while sleeping or waking. Medical history and some additional info on the timing of numbness’ occurrence, duration and the limbs to be affected help the doctor diagnose critical condition of numbness. Some questions on living style, exposure to typical climates, usage of toxic substances, infection, diseases or anxieties also divulge the condition and symptoms of paresthesia or numbness and stinging sensation explicitly. Hereditary diseases of health complications also are taken into account by the doctor when diagnosing the disease. By asking variety of questions on personal life the doctors manage to reach actual condition causing the symptoms of paresthesia. After diagnosing the symptoms the doctors administer the effective medicines keeping in view the suitability of drugs on patient’s health.

The individuals passing through mental frustration or typical anxiety continuously are much susceptible to paresthesia which causes numbness on their neck and ears rendering them approximately senseless in responding to their surrounding environment. It is one of the most serious conditions of a person affected from paresthesia. The individuals affected from numbness in the brain, neck or the ears should consult a neurologist immediately for effective treatment. The patients of paresthesia experiencing numbness in their ears, neck, brain and the hands while sleeping or doing any routine work are required to be treated canonically under the medical supervision. Blood of the patient is examined and analyzed by the neurologists to find out actual condition of metabolic function as well as actual condition of the health. Apart from blood test some additional examinations also are conducted on the patient suffering from parestheisa, such as electromyography, imaging and nerve biopsy.

Treatment

Falling sleep by the hands, legs, fingers or any other specific part of body is a condition known as numbness. The blood circulation on a body’s particular part is affected causing in this way numbness which turns into tingling sensation when the blood circulation is restored. The tingling sensation preceded by numbness and happens to be short-lived among the healthy individuals. But aging patients suffering from chronic diseases or mental trauma can be affected any moment from numbness for a long duration. Restoring the blood circulation is the most effective natural treatment and the doctors also expedite it through massage on those whose condition is found much critical. Massage or throwing the numb legs or hands forward restore normal blood circulation.

Though healthy people are not required any drug, the patients or those whose condition is found much critical due to paresthesia or numbness in neck, and the ears, should be administered some anti-inflammatory drugs like ibuprofen or aspirin for quick respite from the problem. The individuals encountering paresthesia syndrome, due to a tremendous mental trauma or anxiety, are prescribed by the doctors powerful anti-depressant medicines like amitriptyline. Such type of medicine is much powerful and treats the condition of extreme numbness in hands, ears or neck much faster. These medicines are effective enough in dealing with the numbness and its aftereffects. But if you think that it can be taken as anti-depressant by other people in dealing with depression, it’s your misconception. The doctors recommend the mentally agonized patients of paresthesia the codeine too.

Consumption of vitamin B12, vitamin 6, vitamin B complex and application of ointments or topical creams containing capsaicin are some of the effective treatments for numbness affecting different parts of body.
The numbness occurring in any part of body provided is related with improper posture or compression, it can be sorted out with the restoration of blood circulation, while the paresthesia associated with neurological syndrome requires a fast medical attention. I am 51 and I have experienced numb hands while sleeping for many years and have gradually come to the realization that their is a connection with taking multi vitamins. When regularly taking multivitamins this symptom has increased. When ceasing to take them altogether the symptom gradually disappears over a course of several nights. I have never been clear about which vitamin may be causing this and my “theory” has not been considered valid by any doctor that I have consulted.

      H Jasmine,
I am 34 and I started having numbness in my hand and leg (occassionally) when I started taking a 1 a day multivitamin. So now i’m off vitamins all together but the numbness still remains. My doc thinks its a result of me sleeping on my limbs and refuses to look into it so I’s getting a new doctor.
